Gunnar's Daughter by Naoko-the-miko Gunnar's Daughter by Naoko-the-miko
"'Then you shall see, Viga-Ljot, that my will is as strong as yours.'

"More than a decade before writing her famed medieval epic 'Kristin Lavransdatter', Sigrid Undset published 'Gunnar's Daughter', a brief, swiftly moving tale about a more violent period of her country's history. Set in Norway and Iceland at the beginning of the eleventh century, this is the story of the beautiful, spoiled Vigdis Gunnarsdatter, who is casually raped by the man she wanted to love. A woman of courage and intelligence, Vigdis is toughened by adversity, raising her child alone, repeatedly defending her autonomy in a world governed by men, rebuilding her life, and restoring her family's honor, until an unrelenting social code propels her to take the action that again destroys her happiness. More than a historical romance, 'Gunnar's Daughter' depicts characters driven by passion and vengefulness, themes as farmiliar in Undset's own time-and in ours-as they were in the Saga Age."

-Penguin Classics Back Cover, 1998 edition, with an introduction and notes by Sherrill Harbison, translated by Arthur G. Chater

Now, about this concept....

I did use runes. (If you don't know what they are, check this out -[link] .)

The runes used were Alu and Othalan. Alu's meaning is ever debated over by scholars, meaning anything from ale to taboo to temple. The meaning I used for this was protection, derived from earlier etymologies from the Proto-Germanic 'alh': protect, or to protect. Othalan, on the other hand, has a slightly varied meaning-heritage, estate, & possession-the later interpretation being what I used. Othalan can be seen on her left wrist, and Alu is carved into the hilt of her dagger, the same dagger that was an ancestor of hers- a pagan priestess.

And the bloodstains on her dress.... From the description, you should be able to put together their meaning & origin.

How can I explain the compulsory drive that led me to make this concept substantial?

Vigdis' will, her immortal rage and need for vengeance. Easy enough to relate to.
